Scouting Report

2002 Season
Signed as a free agent, Shigetoshi Hasegawa gave the Mariners a big boost over the first half of the season, replacing the injured Jeff Nelson as the club's top righthanded setup man. Hasegawa faltered in August and September, ceding his role back to Nelson, but overall it was one of his best years.

Pitching & Defense
Hasegawa has good command of an average fastball, a forkball and a slider. With no one on base, Hasegawa works up and down, but in double-play situations, he goes for groundballs and gets them, inducing a remarkable 13 twin-killings in 2002. He is not a strikeout pitcher by any stretch, and he's sharpest when he gets a day off between appearances. Not a single base was stolen off him last year, and only one was even attempted. He's a fine fielder.

2003 Outlook
Hasegawa was intent on returning and quickly re-signed with the Mariners after the season without pursuing free agency. Since his style contrasts sharply with Nelson's, the club might mix and match them in the seventh and eighth innings.
