Scouting Report

2002 Season
The Reds re-acquired Gabe White last December in a deal with the Rockies. He bounced back from an off year in Colorado by dramatically reducing the longball. White again ranked as one of the top lefthanded middle relievers in baseball, despite missing time due to a broken toe and strained groin. He tied for the team lead in relief wins and appeared in at least 60 games for the fourth time in the past five years.Pitching, Defense & HittingWorking with Reds pitching coach Don Gullett, White smoothed his mechanics and in the process regained command of his good changeup. White also throws his fastball inside much more often than he used to, making him more effective against righthanded hitters. He has a quick delivery home, which helps to keep the running game in check, and he fields his position well. In his situational role, he rarely hits.

2003 Outlook
A workhorse who re-established himself last year, White likely will hold a key role in the setup end of what is likely to be a revamped Reds bullpen. Tireless lefties with good control like White always will find work. He's signed through this season, and his contract has an option for 2004.
