Scouting Report

2002 Season
With 38 saves last year, Trevor Hoffman became the first pitcher in history to record eight straight 30-save seasons. Only Lee Smith, with 10, ever registered more 30-save seasons in his career. Hoffman, the all-time leader in save percentage (89 percent) widened his lead by converting 93 percent of his opportunities in 2002. His two home runs allowed put to rest previous concerns over a rising trend in surrendering the longball.

Pitching
Hoffman pitches off his changeup. It's probably the best change of pace in the big leagues and arguably one of the best ever. His arm motion for the change is exactly the same as it is with his fastball. He'll show a curve and a slider, as well. But the changeup, which he has been known to throw three or four times in a row, is what hitters look for. Savvy veteran that he is, Hoffman occasionally will pour in nothing but his 88-90 MPH fastballs over the heart of the plate, knowing the hitter is waiting only for his famous out pitch.

Defense & Hitting
Despite his high-leg-kick delivery, the former minor league shortstop is quick and agile off the mound. He doesn't hold on runners very well, instead preferring to concentrate on the batter. While he rarely gets to bat, he takes an aggressive swing, which has resulted in two doubles among his four career major league hits.

2003 Outlook
Hoffman's offseason included surgery to clean up some fraying in his right shoulder, very similar to the operation he had after the 1995 season. He should be ready to go this spring. In 2002, he put to rest any notion that he was on the downside of his career, despite the loss of his plus fastball. His changeup and pitching instincts are so well developed, he undoubtedly will be closing for the Padres when they open their new stadium in 2004.
