Scouting Report

Pitching
Wickman is a sinker-slider pitcher. He's not a blow-'em-away closer, but he throws harder than people think. His fastball ranges from 90-93 MPH. His sinking fastball, which has good downward movement, is his outpitch. Wickman has a compact motion and he short-arms the ball. He can pitch more than one inning, but the Indians don't like to extend him past three outs. He's vulnerable to lefties, but not many hitters make good contact against him because he locates the ball well. Over the last two years, he's allowed just five homers in 140.1 innings.

Defense
On a pitching staff that made 22 errors last year, Wickman fielded his position cleanly. He handles balls back through the box and in front of the mound well, but a fast runner will test him if he has to cover first base on bunts and slow rollers. He's getting better at holding runners. Three of the five basestealers who ran on him in 2001 were thrown out.
