Scouting Report

Pitching
With his loose-limbed motion, Astacio had seemed impervious to injury. His ability to coax groundballs helped him succeed at Coors Field, where virtually every other pitcher has struggled. Astacio was capable of looking downright dominant on occasion, as long as he maintained command of his darting fastball, which travels in the range of 90 MPH. He also could summon a hard-breaking curveball, a decent sinker and an arresting changeup, which he'd use to neutralize lefthanded batters. Astacio's bugaboo often was one bad inning in which he'd implode without warning. If he could avoid or survive that, he had a good chance of proceeding to victory.


Defense & Hitting
A fluid athlete, Astacio performs all of a pitcher's defensive tasks with little trouble. The lapses that occasionally strike him on the mound also can hurt him in the field. He's quick with his pickoff move as well as with his delivery to the plate, which helps discourage basestealers. Astacio is a better hitter than he showed last year (.094), though his 11 sacrifice bunts reflected his ability with the bat.
