Scouting Report Pitching Shaw is not the prototypical closer. His fastball tops out at 90 MPH on a good day, so he must rely on guile and great command. He likes to get ahead by sneaking a first-pitch fastball under the hitter's hands, but oppoenents hit .364 when that first pitch caught too much of the plate and they were able to put it in play. On all other counts, opponents hit just .201 against Shaw. He throws two different fastballs, a sinker and a cutter, and relied more and more on his slider as the year moved along. Defense & Hitting Shaw fields his position quite well, attacking balls in front of the mound and scampering quickly to cover first base on grounders hit to the right side. Unlike most closers, he pays attention to the running game. Though his pickoff move is only fair, Shaw will use it quite often to keep runners close. Since he also gets rid of the ball quickly to the plate, opponents attempted just three steals off him all season. He has not made a plate appearance since joining the Dodgers in 1998. |
