Moyer signs for three years
The Mariners signed left-hander Jamie Moyer to a three-year contract on Dec. 7. With Moyer's signing, general manager Pat Gillick said in a news release, "we can turn our attention to fine-tuning other pieces of the team." John Olerud told reporters before Moyer signed: "If we get Jamie back, I think we'll be real strong at every position on the field, with a good pitching staff, a good bullpen and a good strong club." In the news release, Moyer said he was "thrilled to finish my career in Seattle."

First baseman John Olerud decided to stay with his hometown Mariners, agreeing Dec. 6 to a two-year contract. The deal is worth between $15-$16 million, according to The Seattle Times. "We are very pleased to have John back with us for the next two seasons," general manager Pat Gillick said. "Getting him re-signed was one of our crucial offseason pieces of business." The 34-year-old Olerud hit .300 with 22 homers and 102 RBI last season, the second time in his career he had a .300 average and at least 20 homers and 100 RBI. He also had a .996 fielding percentage and won the second Gold Glove of his 14-year career.

Bob Melvin, bench coach for the Diamondbacks the past two seasons, was named to succeed Lou Piniella as manager of the Mariners on Nov. 15. "I am very pleased to be able to name Bob Melvin as our new manager," general manager Pat Gillick said. "After talking with all of our candidates, Bob was our No. 1 choice. He is a very strong communicator who will be able to motivate and lead our players." The job is the first as a big-league manager for Melvin, 41, who turned to scouting and coaching after 10 seasons in the majors as a catcher. His only job as a manager was with Maryvale in the Arizona Fall League in 1999. Melvin agreed to a contract for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, with a club option for 2005.
