More surgery for Hoffman?
Trevor Hoffman
Hoffman
Closer Trevor Hoffman is unlikely to start the 2003 season. General manager Kevin Towers said on Feb. 8 that Hoffman, 35, could require a second operation on his pitching shoulder, a setback that probably would sideline him for more than two months. Towers said Feb. 8 that the problem isn't career-threatening, but he hoped Hoffman doesn't have to miss the whole season. Hoffman, who's fifth on the all-time saves list with 352, is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in October. The four-time All-Star hasn't thrown a baseball since the operation. Towers says if Hoffman's shoulder pain persists this month, he likely would need more intensive surgery. That could put Hoffman out for the season.

Lockhart agrees to deal
Keith Lockhart
Lockhart
The Padres agreed to terms Feb. 3 with free-agent infielder Keith Lockhart on a minor-league contract for the 2003 season and invited him to spring training as a non-roster player. Lockhart appeared in 128 games for the Braves last season, batting .216 with 13 doubles, five home runs and 32 RBI. Lockhart has appeared in a total of 917 major league games with San Diego, Kansas City and Atlanta. He batted .261 with 41 home runs and 260 RBI over nine years in the majors.

PETA opposes Petco
An animal rights group has asked the Padres to back out of a deal giving the Petco retail firm naming rights to the team's new downtown ballpark. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is leading a boycott against the San Diego-based pet-supply chain, alleging animal cruelty at some of its stores. The group contends a high number of animals have died from disease and crowding at Petco stores. The Padres and the pet supply company agreed to a naming rights deal reportedly worth more than $60 million over 22 years on Jan. 22. The ballpark is scheduled to be completed by opening day 2004.

  • CAPLE: THE TEACHER
Now that his playing days are over, Tony Gwynn is in the midst of his second career -- as a college baseball coach at San Diego State. "I put a sign up in the clubhouse that says, 'The road to Omaha starts through this door.' Starting out, that can be tough for (the players) to believe because they may not see themselves as being just as good as any team in the country. But we're going to be. It may take a year. It may take three years. Or longer. But we're going to get there."

    NEWS AND NOTES
  • LHP Kevin Walker and the Padres avoided salary arbitration Jan. 16 when they agreed to a $450,000 contract for next season.
  • RHP Brian Tollberg agreed to a minor-league contract with the Padres on Jan. 10. Tollberg, who was in San Diego's rotation until undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery in June, was invited to spring training with the big league club and will earn $350,000 if he makes the team.

    GAMMONS: TESTING 1,2,3
Phil Nevin has moved to left field this spring to insert Sean Burroughs, who had a shoulder impingement that ruined his ballyhooed rookie season, at third base. But the way to look at this season is that this is the dress rehearsal for the new park in 2004, and that by August the young talent should all be in place.
