NEWS AND NOTES

The Phillies played the final major league spring training game at Jack Russell Stadium on March 28 against the Yankees. The team will move next year to a new spring training ballpark, a few miles away. Hall of Famer Robin Roberts, who started the first game at Jack Russell in 1955, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

LHP Bud Smith, who had surgery on his left shoulder to repair a torn labrum in October, will remain in Clearwater for extended spring training, before reporting to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. Smith was acquired last summer in the trade that sent Scott Rolen to St. Louis.

The Phillies acquired OF Wendell Magee from the Indians for a player to be named later March 25. Magee, who was drafted by Philadelphia in 1994 and was the Phillies' opening day center fielder in 1997, will be placed on the roster of the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team.

RHP Brandon Duckworth will open the season on the disabled list and won't make a start until April 15 at the earliest. Duckworth hasn't pitched since March 9 because of tendinitis in his right elbow. Joe Roa will take Duckworth's spot in the rotation as the fifth starter. RH reliever Turk Wendell (sore elbow) also will start the season on the DL and OF Jason Michaels, the 25th man last year, is likely to join Duckworth and Wendell. Michaels has been sidelined with a strained oblique muscle.
