Expos roll over Mets in first 'home' game in Puerto Rico

A glove story
 tsuyoshi shinjo
Shinjo's known for sterling defense.
Outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo said goodbye to his glove -- the only leather he's used in games for the last 13 years -- because it needed repair, The New York Times reported April 10. Shinjo sent it via Federal Express to a leather shop in Los Angeles. Before shipping the glove to La Tijera Bootery, he used a pen to meticulously mark where he wanted the repairs. "It's part of my hand," said Shinjo, who admitted to being slightly nervous about not having his glove. "There are three pockets in it. Other gloves have one pocket." Until it is ready, he will play with one he's had for about a month.

League blocks Mets' deal with ex-Astro Reynolds

Puerto Rico Legislature passes 20 percent jock tax in time for Expos' first game in San Juan.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Armando Benitez blew another ninth-inning lead on April 10, giving up a two-out, two-run single to Juan Pierre that sent the Marlins to a 4-3 home victory. "To me it was a lucky hit," Benitez said. The Mets fell to 4-5 after coughing up their third late-inning lead this week, including the last two nights in Florida. "We had the right man on the mound," manager Art Howe said. "He's our closer. He's throwing well."
  • RHP Steve Trachsel allowed just one run in six innings April 9 against the Rockies, but he nearly blew his top when he was called for a balk in the fifth inning -- after appearing to pick off Todd Hollandsworth, the New York Daily News reported. "He (umpire Larry Vanover) said I broke my knee, which you have to do to throw the ball over to first," Trachsel told the newspaper. "When a guy who's not supposed to pick guys off does, he's got to be cheating."

    SCOUTING REPORT (FROM STATS INC.)
    Roberto Alomar, 2003 Outlook
Alomar is eligible to become a free agent after 2003. Despite his difficult 2002, the Mets believe he can return to his previous form and become one of the team's standouts. He was adamant that he wanted to remain a Met, even though he had the right to demand a trade. A more competitive situation ...
