Grissom latest to leave

Karros, among others, has a one-way ticket out of L.A.
The Dodger shakeup continued on Dec. 6. Free-agent outfielder Marquis Grissom agreed to a multiyear deal with the Giants. Grissom agreed to a two-year contract worth about $4.5 million to become the third player in a week to jump the Dodgers' ship. First baseman Eric Karros and second baseman Mark Grudzielanek were sent with $2 million in cash to the Cubs on Dec. 4 for catcher Todd Hundley and outfielder Chad Hermansen.

    Kreuter
The Dodgers have declined their option on Chad Kreuter, opting to pay the 38-year-old switch-hitting catcher a $300,000 buyout rather than a $1.2 million salary next season. Kreuter, a backup to Paul Lo Duca, played in 41 games last season, hitting .263 with two homers and 12 RBI. The Dodgers were required to make a decision on their option on Kreuter within 15 days after the final game of the World Series. Kreuter played in three seasons with the Dodgers, hitting .264 with six homers and 28 RBI in 80 games in 2000 and .215 with six homers and 17 RBI in 73 games in 2001.

    Jordan demands trade
Left fielder Brian Jordan, who hit .347 and had an NL-leading 30 RBI in September to help keep the Dodgers in playoff contention until the season's final weekend, exercised his right to demand a trade Oct. 30. As a player traded in the middle of a multiyear contract, he is allowed to file a trade demand during the 15 days following the World Series. If no deal is reached by March 15 and Jordan does not rescind his request, he becomes a free agent and loses $11.5 million of guaranteed money. If he is traded, he loses three years of potential free agency.

  • ROGERS: FILLING THE VOID
With all-time home run leader Eric Karros now with the Cubs, GM Dan Evans must replace him. The in-house option, Chin-Feng Chen of Taiwan, would help the Dodgers avoid the luxury tax -- a Fox-mandated priority -- but had 160 strikeouts to go with his 26 homers at Triple-A Las Vegas last season. As a result, the club will probably look outside the organization.

    NEWS AND NOTES
  • Free-agent INF Dave Hansen, who spent the past 11 seasons with the Dodgers, agreed to a two-year contract with the Padres on Dec. 10.
  • The Dodgers sold the contracts of RHP Kevin Beirne and LHP Jeff Williams to Japanese teams Dec. 6. Beirne's contract was sold to the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes of the Japanese Pacific League while Williams' contract was sold to the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese Central League.
  • Former scouting director Ben Wade died Dec. 2 after a long battle with cancer. Wade, who was 80, spent more than 30 years in the Dodgers' organization as a player, scout and scouting director prior to retiring after the 1990 season.
  • The Dodgers and Mets will play a pair of spring training games in Mexico City next year -- the fourth time in five seasons that Major League Baseball will be playing spring training games in Mexico. The teams will meet March 15 and 16.
  • Three people were charged with trying to sell a baseball autographed by Jackie Robinson that was stolen from Winsted (Conn.) mayor John Forrest's home on Nov. 18. The baseball, which had been appraised at $10,000, was signed by members of the 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers, including Robinson and Harold "Pee Wee" Reese.
  • The Dodgers added RHPs Andrew Brown and Alfredo Gonzalez, LHPs Hong-Chih Kuo and Rick Roberts and C Koyie Hill to their 40-man roster Nov. 20.
  • LH reliever Jesse Orosco, who turns 46 on April 21, won't be back for a fourth season in a Dodgers uniform. Orosco agreed to a $800,000, one-year contract Nov. 19 with the Padres. "I know I'm going to be 46, but I pitched very well for the Dodgers in 2001 and even better in 2002, and I felt I didn't deserve a minor league contract," Orosco said.
  • Luke Prokopec has returned to the Dodgers. The 24-year-old Australian right-hander, traded by Los Angeles to the Toronto, agreed Nov. 4 to a two-year, minor league contract with the Dodgers. Prokopec was 2-9 with a 6.78 ERA in 22 games (12 starts) for the Blue Jays before surgery on his right shoulder Sept. 14.
  • Dave Wallace, senior vice president of baseball operations, rejected the Mets' offer to become their pitching coach, The Los Angeles Times reported Nov. 6. "We're real happy about it," GM Dan Evans told The Times. "I wanted what was best for him, but I was keeping my fingers crossed that he'd be back."
