Avery signs minor-league deal
 steve avery
Avery pitched in four World Series for the Braves, posting a 1-3 record.
A veteran of 10 major league seasons, left-hander Steve Avery will try to revive his career with the Tigers. Avery, who won 18 games for the Braves in 1993, agreed to a minor league contract with Detroit on Jan. 23 and was invited to spring training. Avery last pitched in the major leagues in 1999, when he was 6-7 with a 5.16 ERA for the Reds. "I lost some of my enthusiasm for the game after my (shoulder) surgery in August of '99, but it's back now," Avery, a Michigan native, told The Detroit News. "I'm really looking forward to giving this a shot." He is 94-83 with a 4.17 ERA in 278 lifetime appearances for Atlanta, Boston and Cincinnati.

    Hot Stove Heater: Tigers
ESPN The Magazine's Andy Latack takes a look at the Tigers in Hot Stove Heaters: Let's hope Tiger fans are nostaligic because it's going to be a while before Detroit competes. Yet with the hiring of Alan Trammell, the shortstop on the Tigers' 1984 World Series champion team (and the subsequent addition of'84 staples Kirk Gibson and Lance Parrish -- we're still waiting on Tom Brookens to get that base-coach job), the Tigers' most recognizable names this season are going to be in the dugout rather than on the field. Will fans want to come out and see blasts from the past, because last year's attendance, 1.5 million, was down one million from 2001?

  • KURKJIAN: LONG ROAD AHEAD
The immediate future is grim in Detroit, though moving in the fences at Comerica Park should generate more offense, and slightly more fan interest. So should the hiring of Alan Trammell, one of the greatest Tigers ever, as manager. His job is enormous, but at least the club management understands the problem, and it is gutting the building and starting over.

    NEWS AND NOTES
  • Former Detroit ace Jack Morris will serve as color commentator on the 40 Tigers games that WKBD-TV will broadcast this season.
  • RHP Nate Cornejo agreed Jan. 30 to a one-year contract with the Tigers. He would get $303,000 if he is in the major leagues and $90,900 if he's in the minors.
  • The Tigers agreed to a minor-league contract with INF Kevin Witt on Jan. 29 and invited him to spring training. Witt hit .263 with 24 homers and a league-leading 107 RBI at Triple-A Louisville last season and was an International League All-Star.
  • The Yankees added RH reliever Juan Acevedo to their pitching staff on Jan. 27. Acevedo, who agreed to a minor-league contract, had a career-high 28 saves as the Tigers' closer last year. The 32-year-old right-hander went 1-5 with a 2.65 ERA.
  • RH reliever Julio Santana, whose 2002 season was cut short by an elbow injury, re-signed with the Tigers on Jan. 24. Financial terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed. To make room on the 40-man roster, the contract of OF Craig Monroe was sent to Triple-A Toledo.
  • The Tigers signed 3B Tom Evans to a minor-league deal on Jan. 23. Evans played for the Seibu Lions in Japan last season and hit .252 with 15 homers and 45 RBI.
  • INFs Warren Morris and Danny Klassen were among 18 players invited Jan. 14 to spring training by the Tigers as non-roster players.
