Byrnes heads to Beantown
josh byrnes
Byrnes
Assistant general manager Josh Byrnes is leaving the Rockies to take a similar position with the Red Sox. Byrnes was the chief adviser to general manager Dan O'Dowd since joining the Rockies in 1999. He will become Boston's vice president of baseball operations and an assistant under new general manager Theo Epstein. "The Red Sox are such a unique team and Boston is a place with so much baseball tradition that I couldn't pass up the opportunity," said Byrnes, who added the most difficult part of leaving will be ending his 10-year relationship with O'Dowd.

    Neagle on his way out?
     Denny Neagle
Neagle was 8-11 with a 5.26 ERA last season.
The Yankees, Mets and Rockies have talked about a three-way deal that would send pitcher Denny Neagle to the Mets, the New York Daily News reported. Each of the three teams would pay a share of Neagle's contract, the News reported. Neagle has struggled in Colorado and has at least three seasons left on a contract that will pay him at least $37 million. Yankee outfielders Raul Mondesi and Rondell White and Mets outfielder Jeromy Burnitz and shortstop Rey Ordonez also could be involved in a deal, the newspaper said, citing several unidentified baseball sources.

    O'Dowd
General manager Dan O'Dowd has finally admitted his initial philosophy about how you win in Denver -- with speed and pitching -- was a good try, but incorrect, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported. "That approach just doesn't work," said O'Dowd. "I understand that now. In Denver, pitching is neutralized and speed is no factor, except on defense. And defensively, it only helps you in the middle of the diamond. The rest of your lineup needs to be offense-based. You just can't build a team here the same way you build it anywhere else."

    No deal: Walker won't defer
    Larry Walker
    Walker
The tentative trade to send Larry Walker from the Rockies to the Diamondbacks for Matt Williams and three others fell through on Nov. 22. General manager Joe Garagiola Jr. said the sides had ceased talks after Arizona failed to reach a financial agreement with Walker. Williams and Walker had to approve the deal because both have no-trade clauses. Williams was reluctant to approve a trade because he has full custody of his three children, who are 10, 11 and 12. Walker balked at the Diamondbacks' request that he defer a portion of the $25 million he is due for 2004 and 2205.

    Hampton lands in Atlanta
     Mike Hampton
The Rockies will pay $11M of Hampton's remaining salary.
Mike Hampton's stay with the Marlins was brief. A whirlwind weekend sent the left-hander from Colorado to Florida and then to Atlanta, where he'll try to rejuvenate his career. Hampton, 21-28 for the Rockies the past two seasons, was part of a six-player swap between Colorado and Florida completed Nov. 16. In that deal, Hampton and outfielder Juan Pierre moved to the Marlins, while catcher Charles Johnson, outfielder Preston Wilson, left-handed reliever Vic Darensbourg and second base prospect Pablo Ozuna went to the Rockies.

  • STARK: BREAKING THE BANK
One upshot of all the Rockies' wheeling and dealing is this: You can forget those Jeff Kent-to-Colorado rumors. Although they get long-term savings out of the Mike Hampton deal, the Rockies will actually be taking on more than $12 million in payroll over the next three years. They would get just a minimal short-term payroll break from the Larry Walker trade. And if they wind up trading Denny Neagle for Jeromy Burnitz and Rey Ordonez, that would add more than $8 million to the debit sheets for next year. In other words: They'll have no money left to do anything but bottom-feed in this free-agent market.

  • RHP Shawn Chacon was arrested for allegedly hitting a man in the face with a beer bottle during a bar scuffle. Chacon, 24, faces a charge of third-degree assault, police said. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 23 and could be sentenced to up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted.
  • The Rockies added six players to its 40-man major league roster Nov. 20 -- INFs Garrett Atkins, Clint Barmes and Brad Hawpe; RHP Ryan Cameron; C J.D. Closser; and OF Choo Freeman. The team also released 2B Jose Ortiz and RHP Sean Lowe.
  • The Rockies are keeping ticket prices the same next season. "Our decision not to raise ticket prices in 2003 is a reflection of many factors, including the tremendous support we have received over the past 10 years," president Keli McGregor said Nov. 14. "We are also committed to keeping the individual-game experience at Coors Field attractive and affordable to families."
  • RF Larry Walker won his seventh Gold Glove. 1B Todd Helton won his second straight.
  • RHP Scott Elarton, who missed all of last season with shoulder problems, expects to agree to terms to remain with the Rockies, the Rocky Mountain News reported Nov. 8. "I don't want to play anywhere else," Elarton told the newspaper. "I like (manager) Clint (Hurdle). I like the doctors and the trainers. There's a good young core of guys."
  • While no deal has been completed, the Orix BlueWave are interested in acquiring 2B Jose Ortiz, the Kyoto News Service reported Nov. 8.
  • 1B Todd Helton and LHP Mike Hampton won Silver Slugger awards Nov. 5. The award honors the best offensive players at each position in each league and was voted on by major league managers and coaches.
  • The Rockies named Bob Apodaca pitching coach on Oct. 31. Apodaca, 53, has had a long relationship with manager Clint Hurdle. They worked together four of the six seasons that Hurdle managed in the Mets' minor league system. Apodaca was the Mets' major league pitching coach from August 1996 to July 1999 and the Brewers' in 2000 and 2001. He returned to New York last season.
  • The Rockies declined the option Oct. 29 on RH reliever Sean Lowe but retained his arbitration rights.
  • The Rockies on Oct. 28 picked up RH reliever Todd Jones' $3 million option for 2003, The Denver Post reported. The Rockies, however, declined 3B Todd Zeile's option, choosing instead to exercise a $517,500 buyout.
