Every now and then, a book immediately becomes my new best friend for a while. Recently, I came across not one but two books, both of which became my almost daily gardening companions. I thought I'd share these books with you for two reasons. One, simply because they're invaluable references. And two, because they're great gift ideas.

Q. I live in the Mount Vernon (Va.) area, which is well provided with a variety of oaks. I noticed this fall's super crop of acorns has been produced only by white oaks and overcup oaks, not by red, willow or pin oaks. Do you know the reason for this mystery?
