Hunger in our midst
While many of us gather with our families for Thanksgiving dinner, millions of our nation's working poor will line up outside soup kitchens. The number of people living in poverty rose 1.3 million last year, bringing the total to 33 million. The unemployment rate is 5.7 percent, which means that 9.6 million Americans are without jobs. More than 41 million do not have health insurance, and one out of five children go hungry, the highest rate of child poverty among industrialized countries.

I'll be talking turkey and toting Atkins
When I called the Atkins Medical Center in midtown Manhattan, I got a recording. "I'm Dr. Robert Atkins," said a disembodied and surprisingly eager voice. Iraq war inevitable?
In the London Mirror newspaper on Nov. 21 there was the following headline: "Bush Aide: Inspections or not, we'll attack Iraq." Bush's top security adviser, Richard Perle, addressed an all-party meeting of British parliamentarians on global security. The Pilgrims gave us more than Thanksgiving
As a descendant of a Mayflower voyager, I have had a longstanding interest in learning more about the Pilgrims, the native people they found when they landed, and how they managed to live together in acceptable harmony.
