Focus on fun
Creative products for a not-so-scary Halloween

Star-Telegram Staff Writer
Forget the tricks; we've scared up some really cool treats for Halloween. We found five fun new products that'll put some pizzazz in your holiday - without the scary stuff.

  • What: Fun-kin carvable pumpkin
  • Price: $29.98
  • Get it: www.lillianvernon.com or (800) 545-5426
  • Ages: 3 and up
  • What it does: Carve this polyurethane pumpkin once, and you'll never have to carve again. Just reuse it every year. No pumpkin pulp or seeds to squish between your fingers.

Comes with a slot so you can slide in a light bulb and cord -- no candles, please!

  • Why we like it: If you've ever carved a really good jack-o'-lantern face, you know how painful it is to toss it out after a week. This pumpkin can be used over and over, but it's got the face you design.
  • What: Bubble blower and solution
  • Price: $9.98
  • Get it: www.lillianvernon.com or (800) 545-5426
  • Ages: 3 and up
  • What it does: Mount this plastic dish in the mouth of your jack-o'-lantern, fill it with bubble solution and watch your trick-or-treaters' mouths fall open as the bubbles begin to blow.
  • Why we like it: This puts a whole new spin on jack-o'-lanterns and eliminates the need to leave a burning candle on the porch.

  • What: Papier-mache ghoul treat bucket
  • Price: $14.99
  • Get it: MJDesigns
  • Ages: 1 and up
  • What it does: Give your trick-or-treater a cool new look this year with this lightweight bucket.
  • Why we like it: Look at it! If you've got a Shrek costume, you've got to have it! Plus, it's really lightweight so you can load up some serious candy.
  • What: Fright lights from Pumpkin Masters
  • Price: $3.99
  • Get it: Target
  • Ages: 4 and up
  • What it does: Remember Lite Brite? This is it in a pumpkin shell. Comes with three paper designs, which can be taped on the outside of a real pumpkin. Then tap in the colored plastic pegs. Put the flashing plastic light (you'll need a 9-volt battery, but the light is included) inside the pumpkin and set it on the porch.
  • Why we like it: You have to carve out the lid, but after that, even a 2-year-old can scoop out the pumpkin guts and pound in the plastic pegs. Remember those wooden hammer and peg sets? This is much easier and also comes with a little wooden hammer! Even a preschooler can nail this one. Again, no burning candle on the porch.
  • What: Wilson haunted house gingerbread kit
  • Price: $9.99
  • Get it: Target
  • Ages: 4 and up
  • What it does: Gingerbread houses aren't just for Christmas anymore. This haunted house is not scary, and comes with enough candy and icing to decorate a couple of houses.
  • Why we like it: You'll need to add water to the icing and hit it with the mixer, but the rest is a piece of cake. The house is already assembled, so you're ready to decorate - or just chow down on the candy.
