Blue Jackets 5, Kings 1

The Los Angeles Kings traveling to Columbus in October has always led to this result: Kings 7, Blue Jackets 1.

Not this time.

Tyler Wright scored two of his three goals in the third period Sunday, leading the Blue Jackets to a 5-1 victory. The Kings had won 7-1 each of the last two years in October.

"L.A. has given us a couple of beatings in the past," Blue Jackets forward Geoff Sanderson said. "So we knew that if we played another game like that, they would give us another beating."

Sanderson didn't have to worry.

The Blue Jackets jumped ahead 2-0 after the second period. Columbus then scored three times after Adam Deadmarsh put the Kings on the board with just more than 11 minutes to play.

"L.A. is really a good team," Blue Jackets coach Dave King said. "They've made a lot of good teams in the league look really average."

Wright made the Kings look below average with his first goals of the season. He completed his hat trick - the second of his career - with 28.1 seconds left. His last goal extended Columbus' club-record streak of eight games in a row with a power-play goal. It was the fifth hat trick in Blue Jackets history.

Sanderson and Hannes Hyvonen each added a goal and an assist for Columbus. Blue Jackets goaltender Marc Denis had 24 saves, handing the Kings their first road loss of the season.

"That was in the back of our mind, the way they played in this building," Denis said. "But with all due respect to them, it didn't matter who we played tonight. It was about the Blue Jackets bouncing back."

Columbus took a 2-0 lead for the fourth consecutive game, but did not squander it this time. The Blue Jackets beat Florida 4-1 Oct. 23, but tied Tampa Bay on Wednesday and lost 5-4 to San Jose on Friday.

Wright's second goal was the first shorthanded score for Columbus this season. It came with 4:46 remaining on a slap shot from the right side that made it 4-1.

Less than two minutes into the game, Sanderson opened the scoring with his fourth goal in four games. Cassels won the faceoff and Sanderson sent a shot from the left circle through Storr's pads.

Cassels has eight points - one goal and seven assist - in the last four games.

The Kings nearly scored moments before Sanderson's goal, but Rostislav Klesla cleared Brad Chartrand's shot off the goal line.

Notes:@ Columbus is 2-0-1 at home this season when allowing two or fewer goals. ... Los Angeles entered with a 1-0-2 record in its last three games and undefeated on the road (2-0-1). ... Ziggy Palffy, who led the Kings with 32 goals last season, missed his second consecutive game and fifth of the last six with a strained groin. ... After 58 straight sellouts, which was the fourth-longest streak in the league, Columbus has had four consecutive non-sellouts.
