Some key facts about "Hogan's Heroes" star Bob Crane:
Born: July 13, 1929, in Waterbury, Conn.
Died: June 29, 1978, in a Scottsdale, Ariz., motel room. He was asleep after finishing a dinner-theater performance when someone broke into his room and bludgeoned him to death with a crowbar. A close friend (a shady character played by Willem Dafoe in "Auto Focus") was tried for the crime but acquitted.
Early days: Crane was a drummer who became a radio disc jockey. That led him to small roles on television. He later parlayed a regular role on "The Donna Reed Show" (Dr. Dave Kelsey) into a chance to star in his own comedy series, "Hogan's Heroes."
Stardom: For six seasons, he played the brash Col. Robert Hogan, leader of a group of commandos operating under the very noses of their Nazi captors.
Peculiar habits: It wasn't learned until after his death, but the smiling Crane had a dark secret. He was addicted to sex, and he not only fed that habit regularly but left behind photographic and videotaped evidence of his sexual exploits.
Boys will be boys: One of Crane's sons, Robert Jr., cooperated with the filmmakers. A second son, Scotty, has publicly attacked the film. The latter son reportedly runs a Web site from which he will download some of his father's pornographic material for a fee.
