Phantoms' skid grows in 6-3 loss
Compiled By The Inquirer Staff

The Phantoms are still looking for their first win over the Cleveland Barons in the American Hockey League after last night's 6-3 setback at the First Union Spectrum.

The Barons made it 3-0-1 in the series as Ryan Kraft recorded a hat trick and teammate Niko Dimitrakos added a goal and two assists.

Kirby Law scored a pair of goals for the Phantoms, who are 0-3-1 since winning their first two games of the season. Defenseman David Harlock added two assists, while goalie Antero Niittymaki finished with 26 saves.

Cleveland's Tavis Hansen gave his team a 1-0 lead after the first period with his third goal of the season. Dimitrakos and Chad Wiseman assisted on the goal with 3 minutes, 18 seconds to play in the first period.

A fluke play enabled Cleveland to move ahead, 2-0, 9:59 into the second period.

Phantoms rookie Patrick Sharp tried a gentle back pass to a teammate who was to the left of the Phantoms net.

However, the pass was a little off and wound up slipping by an unsuspecting Niittymaki. Kraft was credited with the goal.

"Tonight we skated and worked, but didn't work smart," Phantoms head coach John Stevens said. "We are finding ways to lose hockey games. We had a goal called back early and a fluky goal after that."

Ian MacNeil had a goal taken away 4:10 into the game when the referee ruled the net came off its moorings before the puck went in.

"We're frustrated now," Stevens said. "Every time we climbed back in, we got hammered."

Two goals by Law within a 29-second span enabled the Phantoms to even the score.

Law's first goal was during a four-on-three situation for the Phantoms at the 11:36 mark as he placed a wrist shot past Barons goaltender Vesa Toskala from the far circle.
