Timberwolves 111, Pacers 76

Kevin Garnett and Troy Hudson each scored 22 points as Minnesota beat injury-depleted Indiana 111-76 Friday night in the final preseason game for both teams.

Anthony Peeler scored 12 points in his return to the Minnesota lineup. He missed the last three games because of a death in his fiancee's family.

Jermaine O'Neal led the Pacers (5 (3)- with 19 points, Al Harrington scored 15 and Jonathan Bender and Brad Miller each had 10.

The Timberwolves 4 (3)- led 36-14 at the end of the first quarter as the Pacers shot just 25 percent, missing 10 of their first 11 shots. Minnesota led 17-2 midway through the quarter and by as many as 27 in the first half.

"You've got to keep things in perspective," Harrington said. "It's the regular season that counts. We just have to let this roll off our backs as there is no need to panic."

Indiana cut the deficit to 19 midway through the third before Minnesota went on a 12-0 run, highlighted by Garnett's dunk on an alley-oop from Hudson with 3:10 remaining. Minnesota's largest second-half lead was 39 points.

Minnesota limited Indiana to 34.8 percent shooting, the fifth time in its seven exhibition games that Minnesota held its opponent to less than 40 percent.

"No question, we put a huge emphasis on defense," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "Hopefully it'll keep us going until we get all our guys back. We just totally dominated defensively. They couldn't get shots up. That was key.

Minnesota was missing Randy Livingston (sprained left ankle), Joe Smith (strained groin), and Wally Szczerbiak (dislocated toe).

"We're doing a lot of great things right now," Hudson said. "Things are only going to pick up when you add Joe Smith and Wally Szczerbiak to the lineup." Smith is doubtful for the opener and Szczerbiak is expected to be back for the Oct. 30 home game against Denver.

The Pacers played without Ron Artest (left pinkie), Austin Croshere (right foot), Reggie Miller (sprained right ankle), and Jamaal Tinsley (sprained right ankle). Pacers coach Isiah Thomas assumes Artest and Tinsley will be ready for the team's Oct. 30 opener with Houston, while he categorized Miller as "50-50." Croshere is out.
