For every newborn, a hearing test
Liam Paul McMahon was barely 2 1/2 hours old when he had his hearing checked. A nurse at Bryn Mawr Hospital attached three electrodes - one each on the forehead, shoulder and back of his neck - and slid on tiny earphones. Soon an automated program was sending faint clicking noises into Liam's ears, while a laptop computer analyzed his brain-wave response. Liam, swaddled in a white blanket with pink and blue stripes, slept blissfully on.

Hearing study reveals surprises
Naturally, the last thing older folks in Beaver Dam want to hear is that they are going deaf. So 3,753 of them have agreed to regular testing and probing to help people everywhere learn some simple and unexpected things that may ward it off.

In Florida: exam, yes; care, no
All newborns in Florida must have their hearing tested before they leave the hospital. But that doesn't guarantee those infants will receive the treatment they need to hear better.
