"It Might Be NES" Easy CD Creator Tutorial by mh777

Alrighty, before we start, make sure you have the following:

  • The "IMBNES" Zip file, which you can download at http://www.consolevision.com/ps1/emulators/imbnes.shtml
  • Easy CD Creator ver. 4 or higher (or lower; I think it'll work too :p)
  • WinZip (to extract the files to your hard drive, silly)
  • Some NES Roms (preferably some that you actually own. Don't ask me where you can find them; you're a smart person, you can find them on your own :))
  • A PlayStation with a mod-chip installed and/or a GameShark/Action Replay disc

Step 1: Unzipping! (the files, mind you)

After downloading the "IMBNES" Zip, open it with WinZip. The following items should be in the zipfile:

For this tutorial, all we'll need are the "NES.exe," "Rombank.exe," and the "system.cnf" files. That's all. I mean it. All the other files we can ignore. Well, extract those files to a folder called "imbnes" (or whatever you wanna call it, but I'll call it "imbnes," OK?).

Step 2: Rombank and You: A Hate-Love Relationship (or not)

Now that we've extracted the necessary files to your hard drive (nes.exe, rombank.exe, and "system.cnf" files), we'll need to make your NES Roms into a "IMBNES" usuable format. That's where Rombank.exe comes in (cue Bond theme). Double-click on Rombank to start it up. You should see the following:

Before we go on, make sure that your NES Roms are renamed to a 8.3 format (in other words, up to eight characters plus the file extension, like smb.nes for example). This is because of the PlayStation and how it reads filenames.

Anyway, after renaming the files, we'll need to point Rombank to a folder which contains your NES Rom files. See the "Path to ROMs" thingy up there? That's where the fun is. Type in the path to your NES Roms folder (i.e. c:\emu\nesroms\*.nes). Don't forget the "*.nes" portion; without it, Rombank won't be able to seek the roms. After typing in the path, click on "Add ROMs". It should now look like this:

All you have to do now is click on the "Make" button. Voila, a few seconds later, and you'll have your rombank.bin file!

Step 3: Life on a Plate (or making the disc, for those that didn't get the Millencolin reference)

Now that we have the rombank.bin file, we're ready to go into Easy CD Creator. Start up Easy CD Creator and make a new Data CD Layout. Find your "imbnes" folder and all your necessary files (nes.exe, rombank.bin, and system.cnf) Click and drag those three files down to the lower window. Before we go any further, check the CD Layout Properties under the File tab at top. The following options should be used:

  • Joliet
  • Mode 2 CDROM XA

That's it. Now, we must make an ISO image of IMBNES first. Relax, it's not as hard as it sounds. All we have to do at this point is go to the File tab. Under the file tab, click on the "Create CD Image" option. Save it as imbnes, and under the "Save As Type" option, choose the "ISO image file" option. Click save. The image should be made. Once it is done, pop in a blank disc. Underneath the File tab, choose "Create CD from CD Image." Find your imbnes.iso file and open it. The "CD Creation" options should pop up now. Under write speed, choose 2x for safety purposes (although, I've burned it at 4x and have had no problems). It doesn't matter if you choose "Track-At-Once" or "Disc-At-Once" writing; you'll only be burning one track anyways. Click OK once you're ready to burn. In a few minutes, you'll have a shiny new IMBNES to pop in your PlayStation!

But Wait! There's More! (The Important Section)

If you have a PlayStation with a mod-chip installed (like I do), heed this: the emu will hang at the intro screen. To bypass this, you'll need either a PS boot-disc (don't ask me where to get one of those) or a GameShark/Action Replay disc. With the GS/AR disc, load it up and choose to start a game w/o codes. Put in your IMBNES disc when the GS/AR asks for it. Proceed as normal, and the emulator should proceed to the rom select screen. Congratulations and enjoy. Oh, and the controls are as follows for the select screen:

L1 and R1: Navigation of Roms List
Square, Circle, and X buttons: Changes the Code at the Bottom

Change the code to the game you want to play and hit start. Badabing, badaboom. Now you're playing with power :) In-game controls are as follows:

NES B button: Square
NES A button:X
NES Start Button: Start
NES Select Button: Select (those last two were hard to figure out, eh? :p)

Thanks to the following people, things, animals, food products, etc.:

Allan "The Bomb" Blomquist, for creating such a remarkable emulator on the PlayStation ("The Bomb" nickname added by me)
Everyone at Consolevision.com (you know who you are, you little buggers, you! :D)
Me, for having to write this tutorial TWICE (you know why they tell you to save your work every five minutes in case your computer crashes? So you don't have to do this :p)
You, for reading and making something out of my ramblings
Fugazi, for providing background noise while I typed out this tutorial (viva viva viva life and limb :))
Mullets, 'cause nothing's funnier than a strange haircut! :D

Important Legal Stuff:

If you're gonna put this file up on your website, please inform me before you do! I would like proper credit for my hard work, y'know? Forward all e-mails to CoolAMP777@aol.com. No porn or spam, 'cause if I get any from you, you're gonna hear it from me! (I'm serious, might I add.)
