Men's cross country

PSU eighth as hosts

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn State ran a tough race against some outstanding talent Saturday, fighting its way through the muddiness of the Blue and White Golf Courses to an eighth place finish.

The top Nittany Lion was senior Josh Loren, who was 25th overall in 27:04.66. Junior Scott Munro and sophomore Mike Gioia finished in 31st and 32nd place, respectively.

"We're working hard but just didn't get the results we wanted, but sometimes that's what happens," said Penn State coach Harry Groves.

The top five teams overall were Speed River TC of Canada with a score of 91, West Virginia with 95, the Nittany Spiked Shoe team with 98, Guelph, Ontario, with 113 and Canisius with 120 points.

Brauksieck breaks
another course record

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Freshman standout Tracy Brauksieck led the Nittany Lions to a third-place finish and broke her own Penn State course record, running a 21:06.79, four seconds faster than her previous course mark for a Nittany Lion. Brauksieck placed at the top of the Nittany Lion scoring with a fifth-place finish Saturday morning.

Penn State scored 87 points, finishing behind a pair of top
25-ranked teams. No. 8 Providence was first with 51 points and No. 21 Villanova was next with 74 points. No. 22 William & Mary was fourth with 96.

"I was very pleased, it was a very competitive race," Penn State coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "We were within 13 points of Villanova and that is great."

Sophomore Chelsea Lenge placed 16th in 22:00.03, sophomore Molly Landreth was 18th in 22:05.32 and junior Katy Hillard was 19th in 22:05.85. Rounding out the scoring for the Nittany Lions were junior Tara Johnson (29th, 22:27.01), sophomore Michelle Wale (30th, 22:30.01) and junior Maureen Thomas (39th, 22:39.55).

Megan Metcalfe of West Virginia won with a 20:49.72.

Drummond nets hat trick, Welsh reaches milestone

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Junior Heidi Drummond recorded her first career hat trick to lead No. 13 Penn State over Illinois 4-0 at Jeffrey Field on Friday night. The Nittany Lions not only extend their win home streak to 17 games, but also extend a 35-game winning streak over Big Ten teams at Jeffrey Field.

With two assists Friday, senior Christie Welsh became the 14th player in NCAA history to reach 200 career points.

Penn State (10-2-1, 5-1-0 Big Ten), which outshot the Illini
19-4, got the scoring started from Drummond 12 minutes into the game. Illini goalkeeper Leisha Alcia stopped a Welsh shot attempt, but Drummond was there for the rebound and kicked it in for the score.

Tiffany Weimer extended the lead in the 31st minute, putting in a rebound of her own shot on a breakaway. In the second half, Drummond scored again on a breakaway and knocked in a rebound after a penalty kick to complete the hat trick.

The Lion defense, led by goalie Amanda Brown, recorded its third straight shutout in the tough, rainy conditions and the fifth blanking in six games.

Drummond's hat trick is the 13th in school history and she is the sixth Nittany Lion to accomplish that feat.

Welsh's two assists in the game were her 49th and 50th of her career, making her just the 15th player in NCAA women's soccer history to score at least 50 goals and hand out 50 assists.

Penn State is home against Iowa at 10:30 a.m. today.

Wake Forest drops PSU

HARRISONBURG, Va. --
No. 6 Penn State grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a penalty shot but No. 4 Wake Forest responded with six unanswered goals in a 6-1 win Saturday.

The Nittany Lions (10-2) are 2-2 overall versus ranked opponents this season. The defeat also marked the Nittany Lions' first against a non-conference opponent since Sept. 13, 2000 -- a span of 14 games.

Heather Aughinbaugh led Wake Forest with three goals -- two of which came in the second half.

Penn State is back on the field today at No. 7 James Madison.
