PRESEASON

   Bucks under even more scrutiny
Evidently, George Karl was not at fault last season. Neither were Sam Cassell, Ray Allen nor most of the rest of the bunch in Milwaukee. None of them had much to do with the downward spiral that culminated in the Bucks' losing 14 of their last 19 regular-season games and missing the playoffs just one season after advancing to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals against the 76ers.

NEWS AND NOTES

Sprewell feels tagged as the Knicks' `scapegoat'
There are backup plans, and then there are fall-flat-on-your-face plans. The way troubled guard Latrell Sprewell sees it, the New York Knicks have prepared the latter before this season begins. It's not a way to quickly retool should this season's team fail, but a place to lay the blame.

DELE REMEMBERED

250 pay their final respects to Bison Dele, brother
In the last three years, Patricia Phillips has memorialized her mother, her father and her sister.

INJURY REPORT
Knicks' McDyess Out Indefinitely
The news keeps getting worse for the New York Knicks, whose miserable preseason has turned downright disastrous.
Suns' Marbury to play with pain
Stephon Marbury will play with a sore ankle this season unless the pain becomes too much to bear.
