January 2002   The Newspaper Association of America awarded Knight Ridder Digital its 2001 Best Practice Award in New Media for the development of Xmultra, a program for converting news and classified information into XML.
October 2001  

Online Journalism Awards 2001 names two Knight Ridder Digital sites as finalists:

-Knight Ridder Digital's Washington Bureau Web site, KRWashington.com, for a report on the role of modern-day slavery in the chocolate industry; and

-Philly.com's Philadelphia Inquirer five-week series on the U.S. government's hunt for drug trafficker Pablo Escobar.

Best Special Section In A Newspaper Online Service to PhillyNews.com, Philadelphia Online, for the Best Special Section category. PhillyNews.com won for Blackhawk Down, a 30-part, multimedia Web series that combined hard reporting, novel-like narrative, audio, video, animated graphics and photographs. Blackhawk Down told the inside story of the battle between U.S. troops and Somalian rebels in Mogadishu in 1993.
