This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now
[Alias]
Rating: 5.9

Knapsack's origins can be traced back to Davis, California, home of the radio station at which DJ Shadow once spun vinyl and a hamlet so laughably- anal that a woman was once arrested for snoring too loudly. The quartet, who have performed alongside the likes of Pavement, Fretblanket and labelmates Archers of Loaf, are now sharpening their skills on This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now, their third release.

Unlike Knapsack's previous efforts, Conversation features a more adventurous array of instruments, among them cellos, organs and sleigh bells (or "slay bells," as they're termed on the band's press release). Despite the addition of these new elements-- and of guitarist Sergie Loobkoff, also of Samiam-- the band manages to stay in touch with its post- hardcore roots. Loobkoff and bassist Rod Meyer contribute relentlessly- crunchy strings to each of the ten tracks, while vocalist and guitarist Blair Shehan sings along in a scratchy, Scott Weiland-ish howl. The result is a hazy, guitar- fueled, angst- ridden drone recollective of early Ned's Atomic Dustbin, and required listening for those seeking to plumb the post- hardcore depths.
