"Three things happen when you throw a forward pass and two of them are bad." - Woody Hayes WOODY HAYES pretty much defined college football for more than a generation when he coached at Ohio State. Few people remember, though, that one of his predecessors in Columbus was Paul Brown, who did more to define the parameters of modern NFL coaching than anyone.

Eagles Day After: Bottom line: Does this mean a run on the run?

Maddox takes a page out of Bradshaw's book
Terry Bradshaw finally returned to Pittsburgh, and Tommy Maddox celebrated by playing just like him. Maddox threw two touchdown passes to Hines Ward to lead the Steelers to a 28-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts last night, looking as sharp and steady as a 10-year veteran rather than a quarterback who has barely played in the NFL since 1992.

The road was a safe place for the Flyers last season in just about every city but the one they find themselves in this morning. Both times the Flyers ventured to Buffalo's HSBC Arena, they lost. But before going off on a jinx tangent, it wasn't just the building that got under the Flyers' skins. They lost all four games to the Sabres.

Just Spree being Spree
RIGHT OFF the jump: The New York Knicks' (former-Knick-to-be?) Latrell Sprewell is one of our least favorite people in sports. We have nothing against him suing the New York Post for $40 million over a report that he broke his right hand throwing a punch at a man on his yacht. He's entitled if he thinks it was wrong.

Birds still haven't met match in NFC
AS HE BOOTLEGGED right with 8 minutes, 24 seconds left in the game, Donovan McNabb knew he had accounted for as many Tampa Bay touchdowns as Eagles touchdowns - one apiece on the afternoon. That is not where a Pro Bowl quarterback really wants to find himself, with twilight having faded to night and the game still up for grabs.

IT WON'T BE so bad, you thought. A wild-card game in San Francisco. Hey, we'll always have Fisherman's Wharf.
