Historian Stephen E. Ambrose, 66, whose best-selling books made America's aging World War II veterans hometown heroes again, died yesterday of lung cancer at a Bay St. Louis, Miss., hospital.

Robert B. Wallace, 84, business owner
Robert B. Wallace, 84, a Doylestown agricultural businessman who was concerned with population growth, founded a charitable organization, and discovered a species of bird, died Thursday at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington of complications after a stroke.

J. Stone Bagby, banker, aviator and civic leader
J. Stone Bagby, 83, of Berwyn, a retired investment banker, decorated veteran, former airline owner, and civic leader, died of pancreatic cancer Wednesday at his home.

Karl E. Wenk Jr. | Retired banker, 80
Karl E. Wenk Jr., 80, a retired bank executive, died Wednesday of a heart attack at the Rydal Park medical facility in Rydal. He had been a longtime resident of Jenkintown.

Herbert N. Johnston Sr. | Engineer, band founder, 91
Herbert N. Johnston Sr., 91, a retired engineer, a musician, and the founder of the Philco Concert Band, died of cancer Thursday at his home at Spring House Estates in Lower Gwynedd.

Philip Goldin | Retired Phila. teacher, 91
Philip Goldin, 91, of Edgewater Park, N.J., a retired Philadelphia schoolteacher and Senior Olympian, died of heart failure on Thursday at his home.

Eugene R. Montgomery | Retired truck driver, 68
Eugene R. Montgomery, 68, a retired truck driver for Acme Markets, died of a blood clot to the brain Tuesday, in Osceola Regional Hospital in Kissimmee, Fla.
