War stories: Former Philipsburg office converted into military museum
Hanging on the wall of the U.S. Militaria Museum, the World War II flotation belt looks innocuous next to bayonets and rifles. But, for some American soldiers, it proved deadly. During amphibious landings, men often wore heavy packs that pushed them into the water. In some cases, the belts kept soldiers from rising, causing them to drown.
