STARS

Sunday

_ Mike Piazza, Mets, homered and drove in three runs in New York's 6-1 win over Atlanta.

_ Angel Echevarria, Cubs, drove in four runs as Chicago beat Pittsburgh 7-3.

_ Troy Glaus, Angels, hit a grand slam as Anaheim beat Seattle 7-6.

_ Oliver Perez, Padres, struck out nine in 7 1-3 innings as San Diego beat Los Angeles 2-0.

THE BEST

Barry Zito won his AL-leading 23rd game Sunday in Oakland's 8-7 defeat of Texas. Zito was 8-0 in his last 10 starts and had a season ERA of 2.75, the lowest for an Oakland starter in 13 seasons. He had the most wins by a left-hander in the AL since Frank Viola's 24 for Minnesota in 1988. ... Alfonso Soriano set the New York Yankees record for at-bats in a season (696), breaking the mark of 692 set by Bobby Richardson in 1962. He also led the AL in hits (209), steals (41) and runs (128). ... Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki finished his first two major league seasons with more hits (450) than any other player in history.

THE WORST

The Chicago Cubs led the majors in strikeouts by their pitching staff (1,333) and their batters (1,269), the first time that's happened since 1884. ... Philadelphia stranded 10 players in its 4-3 loss to Florida on Sunday, increasing its total for the season to 1,260, the most in the major leagues. ... Kansas City, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee were 100-game losers, marking the first time in major league history that four teams have lost 100 games in the same season. ... The New York Mets had a major league-high 144 errors.

THE 30-30 CLUB

New York's Alfonso Soriano and Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero each struck out in their last at-bats Sunday, each missing out on becoming the fourth man in league history to achieve 40 homers and 40 steals. Soriano ended the regular season with 39 homers and an AL-leading 41 stolen bases. Guerrero also was stuck on 39 homers and stole 40 bases. The Yankees defeated Baltimore 6-1, while the Expos topped Cincinnati 7-2.

PINK SLIP

Chicago Cubs interim manager Bruce Kimm was fired before the start of Sunday's game. Kimm replaced Don Baylor in July when the Cubs were 34-50. They were 33-45 under Kimm, who began the season as manager at Triple-A Iowa.

GOODBYE

Broadcaster Ernie Harwell called the final game of his Hall of Fame career Sunday. Harwell broadcast major league baseball games for 55 years, 42 of them with Detroit. The Tigers lost to Toronto 1-0.

RBI KINGS

Texas' Alex Rodriguez ended a 0-for-12 slump Sunday by going 1-for-4, which ensured a .300 average to go along with his major league-leading 57 homers - most in the AL since Roger Maris hit 61 in 1961 - and 142 RBIs. ... Lance Berkman went 0-for-2 in a 7-0 Houston loss to San Francisco, but still won the NL RBI title when St. Louis' Albert Pujols failed to drive in a run. Berkman finished with 128 RBIs to Pujols' 127, even though Berkman didn't drive in a run in the Astros' final seven games.

GROUP DISCOUNT

There were perhaps 8,000 fans on hand Sunday to watch Florida beat Philadelphia 4-3 in 10 innings but the announced crowd of 28,599 - second-largest of the season for the Marlins - allowed them to overtake Montreal in season attendance. An anonymous benefactor purchased more than 15,000 tickets so the Marlins wouldn't finish last. Florida's final attendance total was 813,118, an average of 10,038 per game and the lowest in team history. Montreal, which finished its final game three hours earlier, drew 812,545.

CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR

Los Angeles' 2-0 loss to San Diego on Sunday marked the sixth straight season that the Dodgers (92-70) failed to make the playoffs - and the 12th time in club history that they won 92 or more games and did not qualify. ... Boston beat Tampa Bay 11-8 for 93 wins on the season, the third-most by the Red Sox in 24 years but not enough to earn a playoff berth. Boston won 95 games in 1986, when it lost the World Series, and 94 in 1999, when it lost the AL championship series.

ALL FOR ONE

In the New York Mets' 6-1 defeat of Atlanta on Sunday, both teams made liberal substitutions, combining to use 45 players - tying the major league record for a nine-inning game, set by Montreal and the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 5, 1978. The Braves used 24 players, the Mets 21. Atlanta finished the season 12-7 against its NL East rivals, equaling its most wins in a season against the Mets since 1968.

LONG TIME COMING

Josh Fogg (12-12) set a Pittsburgh rookie record for most starts in a season since 1900 with his 33rd Sunday. Don Robinson and Steve Cooke also started 32 as rookies. Sam Leever started 39 games as a rookie in 1899. ... Bobby Abreu doubled in the third inning of Philadelphia's 3-4, 10-inning loss to Florida, increasing his NL-leading total to 50. He became only the third Phillies player to double 50 times, and the first since Chuck Klein in 1932.

NO MISTAKE

Baltimore's Mike Bordick finished what could be his final season with two major league fielding records intact. He had 110 consecutive errorless games and 543 successive errorless chances at shortstop.

MERCIFUL END

Baltimore closed with 12 straight losses, tying the third-longest skid in franchise history. The Orioles went 4-32 after reaching .500 on Aug. 23.

SPEAKING

"I'm the type of guy who cries at movies and cries at funerals if I know them or not. It's a tricky day, but it's part of the game" - Interim manager Bruce Kimm on being fired by the Chicago Cubs before their final game Sunday, a 7-3 win over Pittsburgh.

SEASONS

Sept. 30

1927 - Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season in the eighth inning off Tom Zachary to lead the New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Washington Senators.

1934 - Dizzy Dean beat the Cincinnati Reds, 9-0, for his 30th victory of the year as the St. Louis Cardinals clinched the NL pennant.

1947 - In the first televised World Series, the New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 5-3, in the opening game.

1951 - Jackie Robinson homered in the 14th inning to give the Brooklyn Dodgers a 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, tying the New York Giants for first place in the NL and forcing a playoff.

1962 - Willie Mays homered to give the San Francisco Giants a 2-1 victory over the Houston Colt. 45s in the season's final day. That, coupled with the Los Angeles Dodgers' 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, forced a playoff for the NL pennant. The Giants won in three games.

1972 - Roberto Clemente doubled off Jon Matlack during Pittsburgh's 5-0 victory over the New York Mets. The hit was the 3,000th and last for the Pirates star, who was killed in a plane crash during the offseason.

1984 - California's Mike Witt tossed 97 pitches in a perfect game against the Texas Rangers, 1-0.

1988 - Orel Hershiser of the Los Angeles Dodgers broke Don Drysdale's record of 58 consecutive scoreless innings by shutting out San Diego for 10 innings. The Padres won in the 16th inning, 2-1. Hershiser, who extended his streak to 59 innings, had five consecutive shutout victories in September.

1988 - Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth for the second consecutive start and finished with a 4-0 one-hitter over the Baltimore Orioles. Stieb faced the minimum 26 batters until Jim Trabor lined a single down the right-field line about 3 feet from the glove of first baseman Fred McGriff.

1992 - George Brett became the 18th player to get 3,000 hits in the Kansas City Royals' 4-0 win over the California Angels.

1995 - Albert Belle of the Cleveland Indians hit his 50th home run of the season and became the only player in history to hit 50 homers and 50 doubles in the same season.

1997 - Tim Raines, Derek Jeter and Paul O'Neill hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning against Cleveland, making the New York Yankees the first team to hit three straight homers in a postseason game. O'Neill's homer made it 8-6, the final score of the Yankees' Game 1 victory in the AL division series.

1998 - John Smoltz became the winningest pitcher in postseason history, allowing only five hits in 7 2-3 innings as the Atlanta Braves cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of their NL Divisional Playoff series.
