Now, the waiting begins.
After losing six straight times to Michigan, Penn State will have to wait two years before it gets another opportunity to break the streak. The Wolverines rotate off Penn State's schedule for the next two years.
For the Lions, that's plenty of time to replay Saturday's haunting 27-24 overtime loss to the Wolverines. It was their second overtime loss this season and the third in their history.
But none stung like this one, as they could not hold off the Wolverines, either in regulation or in overtime. Penn State had its chances, taking a 21-14 lead with 7:49 to go.
Then, Michigan went down the field and tied it up on John Navarre's second touchdown pass of the game to Braylon Edwards with 3:24 to go.
In overtime, Penn State was forced to settle for a field goal, which came after Robbie Gould had missed his attempt only to get a reprieve when Michigan was caught offsides.
Michigan responded by moving to the Penn State 3 before Chris Perry slammed into the end zone on third down to touch off a wild celebration in the Big House.
"That's what a great football game is,'' Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said. "It's back and forth, and you win it, and then you lose it, and then you win it.''
For Penn State, the second overtime loss in three weeks dropped its record to 4-2 heading into Saturday's homecoming game with Northwestern. Kickoff is 12:10 p.m.
The Lions are now 1-2 in the Big Ten. Michigan improved to 5-1 overall and are 2-0 in conference play.
