Losses Force Nebraska to Refocus

No one needs to remind Nebraska coach Frank Solich that the Cornhuskers haven't played the most difficult part of their schedule yet.

Solich said Monday that Nebraska (5-3, 1-2 Big 12) must refocus its goals starting with this week's game at Texas A&M. Games against No. 7 Texas, at No. 20 Kansas State and No. 21 Colorado also remain.

This has been one of Nebraska's most disappointing seasons. After playing in the Rose Bowl for the national championship earlier this year, Nebraska has struggled.

The latest embarrassment: a loss to Oklahoma State last Saturday, Nebraska's first loss to the Cowboys since 1961.

"Goals at Nebraska are pretty lofty," Solich said. "There can be - and in this case there are - some adjustments that need to go on."

Nebraska dropped out of the rankings a few weeks ago after a record 21-year run. With the difficult schedule remaining, the Cornhuskers could record the school's first losing season since 1961.

One of the Cornhuskers' goals was to play in the Big 12 Championship game. That is not likely to happen.

"This has certainly been tough on everybody," Solich said. "We want to make sure to play every single game that's left on our schedule with our best."

The last time Nebraska lost three regular-season games this early in a season was 1959. The Huskers were 2-3 by Oct. 19 that year and finished 4-6.

Three years later coach Bob Devaney arrived at Nebraska and started the Huskers' current 30-year streak of nine-win seasons.

To keep that streak alive, Nebraska must pull off at least two upsets.

"It is an extremely challenging schedule coming down to the second half of the season," Solich said. "We need to accept those challenges and meet those challenges head on and get those done."

Nebraska's last road win came nearly a year ago - at Kansas on Nov. 3. Its road losses since were at Colorado, in the Rose Bowl against Miami, and at Penn State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State this season.

Solich said his team is struggling because of its inexperience.

"We have talent, but much of it is young talent," Solich said. "What that will translate to remains to be seen. We're dealing with more inexperience than we have for many, many years."
