It's a good idea to get a home's furnace inspected now, before winter's cold begins to set in, says Gene Meyer, a mechanical engineer at Kansas State University.
Turn off the electricity before checking motors, pulleys and belts for wear. Some bearings require two to three drops of oil annually.
"If the furnace has a continuous pilot, lighting instructions will be next to the burner," Meyer says. After lighting the pilot, replace all covers, turn on the power, set the thermostat above room temperature and listen for the burner to come on. Depending on how long it takes the furnace to warm, the fan should turn on.
Distribution vents in unoccupied areas should be closed, but not more than 25 percent of the total vent area, Meyer says.
Maintenance also is important: Replace disposable filters monthly, and clean washable filters in the air-handling units. Also be sure that the chimney is free of debris, Meyer says.
Light dining room with right size, type of fixture
Here are tips for lighting a dining room, from the American Lighting Association:
A chandelier in the middle of the room defines the space. Choose one with a diameter 12 inches less than the width of the table. The bottom of the chandelier should be 30 inches above the table.
Accent lights on either side of a chandelier and at the room's perimeter brighten things up. Accessory lights on and/or over other furniture pieces fill in the background. Table lamps add a soft, humanizing touch. Display them on a buffet or breakfront.
For ceilings 9 feet or higher, consider a two-tier chandelier.
Use a dimmer to make the light warmer.
If you use the dining room as a study area, bring in a portable study lamp.
