Beth Orton
Trailer Park
[Dedicated; 1996]
Rating: 8.0
Okay, if you've ever read a review of Beth Orton's Trailer Park, you already know that her claim to
fame is recording some vocals on the Chemical Brothers' acclaimed Dig Your Own Hole. If this is the
first time you've ever heard of her, we've got that out of the way.
Of her own accord, Orton's a stunning musician. She sings beautiful, southern classic country in the vein
of Bobbie Gentry, with a sweet touch of trip-hop and a good deal of innovation. Her vocals, a less-than-delicate
but perfectly on-key British style. The opening track, "She Cries Your Name" is a ravishing number featuring
some very dulcet orchestration. Trailer Park also features a cool cover of the Phil Spector-penned
"I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine."
You'll agree, I'm sure, that Orton's debut shows more than a little promise for things to come.
