Cover Art The Kelley Deal 6000
Go to the Sugar Altar
[Nice; 1996]
Rating: 7.0

The Kelley Deal 6000's record, Go To The Sugar Altar is released, and as one might have guessed, I'm all over it like a Breeder in a Pod. When we interviewed Kelley Deal on my birthday back in January, she gave me a demo cassette of the album which I played the hell out of all winter long. Which is kinda fucked up, because it's not that great. I mean, it's decent. Whatever. The final version sounds better in some ways, though the roughly mixed, lo-fi sounds of the demo were appealing. Most of the vocals are re-recorded and re-mixed for that digital quality sound you can only get from our good friend, the compact disc.

"Canyon", the record's opening track and single, is a good-time rockout that gets me on down and dances with my pants. "Sugar" sounds like an old R&B; song twist-tied with Deal's wacky lyrics. However, the real humdinger this record puts out is the poppy, and then suddenly ethereal "Head of the Cult". I can't guarantee there'll be something for everyone here, but Breeders devotees could probably get into it. And if you like The Grifters, Dave Shouse is all over this thing.
