Partnership Extends Real Cities Network to Tampa, FL,
Winston-Salem, NC, and Richmond, VA, Markets
SAN
JOSE, CA and TAMPA, FL - November 12, 2001 - Knight Ridder Digital, founder
of the Real Cities network of city and regional Web sites, and Media General
today announced that Media General's TBO.com (home of The Tampa Tribune
and WFLA-TV), JournalNow.com (home of the Winston-Salem Journal) and TimesDispatch.com
(home of the Richmond Times-Dispatch) are joining the Real Cities Network.
With the addition of Media General, the Real Cities Network reaches 58
cities -- including 16 of the nation's top 25 markets and 27 of the top
50.
"We're
proud to partner with Media General to meet the growing demand for localized
news and information," said Dan Finnigan, president of Knight Ridder
Digital. "In light of the events of September 11, 2001, more than
ever the Real Cities Network is the online destination for Americans looking
to stay current and stay involved with their communities. Today's announcement
with Media General demonstrates Real Cities' commitment to aggressively
expanding the network and delivering news and information anytime, anywhere."
The
addition of Media General's sites also strengthens the network's regional
and channel sales opportunities. TBO.com serves the 14th largest market
nationwide and brings more than one million new users to Real Cities,
which now measures more than 10 million unique users. The markets of Winston-Salem,
NC, and Richmond, VA, bolster the southeast presence in Virginia and North
Carolina with neighboring television partner WVEC-TV in Norfolk, VA, and
The Charlotte Observer and Belo's NBC-6 in Charlotte, NC.
"Regional
sales and efficiencies are key strategies for our Interactive Division,"
said Kirk Read, general manager of Tampa Bay Online. "The Real Cities
relationship offers opportunities for Media General to leverage its Southeast
presence with key markets represented by the Real Cities Network to provide
compelling reach for new and current advertisers."
Knight
Ridder Digital and the Real Cities Network continue to see growth in targeted
channel sales such as sports, health and travel. Tampa Bay is a popular
Florida destination and reaches into the Orlando market online, and Winston-Salem
and Richmond become new assets in the network's already-strong NASCAR
offering. Real Cities offers national advertisers and marketers a one-stop
sales opportunity to reach the most educated and online savvy consumers
in local markets across the country.
"We're pleased to be able to provide our users with access to one
of the most comprehensive and cohesive interactive networks," said
Neal Fondren, president of Media General's Interactive Media Division.
"We believe our experience in convergence between publishing and
broadcast will be an asset from which Real Cities can benefit."
