Officially launched Tuesday, July 9 when more than 40 heads of state converged here to shepherd Africa’s rebirth, the AU emerges as the new source of promise for some 800 million people. The organization, comprised of four governing bodies, replaces the 39-year-old Organization of African Unity (OAU), which waged successful campaigns against colonialism and apartheid, but failed to address crippling economic woes and the wide spread atrocities of African dictators across the continent.
