   Bush lauds effort to rescue miners, attends $1 million GOP fund-raiser
By Sandra Sobieraj The Associated Press PITTSBURGH -- President Bush patted one on the back and hugged another, celebrating the nine rescued coal miners as symbols of an American spirit that will lift the nation above terrorist threats and an economic downturn.

New hotels fill lodging void
By Jane Haseldinejhaseldi@centredaily.comSTATE COLLEGE -- The Hilton Garden Inn may not be open yet, but it's already booking guests for football weekends in 2003.Banking on the popularity of Penn State and the pending opening of Interstate 99, the Hilton, at 1221 E. College Ave., is the latest in a flurry of new hotels to be built in State College. The Hilton is scheduled to open Aug. 29, developer Ed Friedman said Monday.
Bellefonte Area board member to resign
By Anne Danahyadanahy@centredaily.comA controversial member of the Bellefonte Area school board said Monday that he will resign from the board, effective Aug. 13.The resignation of Jake Hanchar, 22, comes after Hanchar, another board member and a former board member wrote letters to the editor of the Centre Daily Times criticizing one another and recent board actions.

Woman forgoes trial in DUI crash
By Angela Pomponioapomponi@centredaily.comBELLEFONTE -- A Houtzdale woman will forgo a trial and spend at least three years in prison for a drunk-driving crash that killed a passenger.Catherine Greenawalt, 24, spoke softly Monday in Centre County Court when entering her guilty plea to charges of homicide by vehicle while DUI and DUI instead of going through jury selection earlier in the day.

Four students arrested for drugs
All are charged with possession, intent to deliverBy Angela Pomponioapomponi@centredaily.comSTATE COLLEGE -- Police arrested four Penn State students Monday and are looking for five others who allegedly possessed and sold drugs during the past year.After an investigation by the Centre County Drug Task Force, police rounded up Ryan D. McCartney, 23, of 615 Clay Lane, Apt. 2, State College; his roommate, Jonathan J. Yencha, 24; Matthew C. Kayhanfar, 24, of 148 S. Allen St., Apt. 308; and Andrew S. Babich, 21, of 924 Bellaire Ave., Apt. 207, State College.

Bellefonte water repairs progressing
By Lara Brencklelbrenckl@centredaily.comBELLEFONTE -- The borough is making progress repairing its leaky water system but is still using too much water.That was the message from the Department of Environmental Protection to the Borough Council on Monday."The meeting went very well," said Borough Manager Ralph Stewart prior to Monday night's council meeting. "They think our leak detection and repair program, our commercial meter upgrade programs were going well. They're going to look at everything we gave them and let us know if we will be penalized or not."

Herman sued for divorce
From CDT staff reportsBELLEFONTE -- State Rep. Lynn B. Herman, whose district includes State College and Philipsburg boroughs and nine municipalities, has been sued for divorce by his wife.A complaint by Barbara G. Herman was filed July 31 in Centre County Court. The complaint alleges that her husband's "indignities" have rendered her "condition intolerable and life burdensome" and asserts their marriage is "irretrievably broken."
