OUTLINE OF THE PLANT The construction site faces the Pacific Ocean and the ground comprises sedimentary rock mainly made up of phyllite. The site is on the plateau 150 meters above the sea level. The upper pond is located on the plateau, about 600 meters from the coast. To preserve the landscape in the area, the penstock, powerhouse and tailrace are laid under the ground. The upper pond is octagonal, 25 meters deep and 252 meters across. It has an effective storage capacity of 564,000 m3. The shape and location of the upper pond were decided based on, i ) the need for a simple shape, because it is to be lined entirely with rubber membranes, ii ) a minimum volume of earth works with an optimum balance between excavation and embankment volumes. The intake is morning glory-shaped. The straight pipe section, which occupies most of the penstock, uses fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) pipes. The curved pipe section is made of steel with electrolytic protection. The powerhouse is located about 150 meters underground and is installed in a cavern 17 meters wide, 32 meters high and 41 meters long. The tailrace tunnel has a concrete-lining structure. A Iocation of the coast where the coral reef is the least developed has been selected as the site for the outlet. At the same time, the layout was sought to minimize impacts on the neighboring environment. In order to maintain stable seawater intake and discharge and to ensure safety, a breakwater structure using precast concrete blocks was adopted. Seawater intake and discharge flow through gaps of the breakwater. |
