ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
In the area surrounding the upper pond, there are 16 species of precious animals (birds and amphibias) that are considered biologically important. And large coral reefs widely surround the outlet. The following measures are being implemented to conserve the land and sea, and the animals and coral occupying those areas:

(a) Reduction in discharge velocity
To mitigate the impact of seawater discharge from power generation on coral, a breakwater of precast concrete blocks (50 tons; 350 pieces, 32 tons; 550 pieces, a total of 900 pieces) is installed around the outer circumference of the out-let structure, and thereby the seawater velocity at the time of power generation is reduced to 10 cm/s approximately.

(b) Conservation of small animals
Fences (30 cm in height, made of polyethylene) were installed around the construction area so that small animals such as land turtles could not enter the construction area, thus protecting them from accidents involving construction vehicles. Slope-type side ditches were also installed. This structure enables small animals such as land turtles and young birds to exit by way of the slope in the direction from which they entered, even when they fall into the side ditches.

(c) Treatments of muddy water
For the purpose of preventing damage by muddy water as a result of earth works, all muddy water generated at construction sites was storaged and chemically treated beforedischarging into natural streams.

Planting seedlings of indigenous trees is planned in order to repair the living environment for plants and animals in the areas that were used as disposal yards and temporary work yards. Monitoring such as salt content in the air around the upper pond is also planned before and after the impoundment of seawater to evaluate the changes. Following surveys are also to be carried out:
(1) Surveys of the coral, (2) Surveys of soil animals, (3)Hydro-biological surveys, (4) Surveys of birds, (5) Surveys of amphibias, (6) Measurements of water quality and noise from works, (7) Measurements of salt content in underground water, (8) Measurements of wave height and velocity in the area surrounding the outlet, (9) Surveys of adhesion quantity of marine organisms.
