Tranquility Bass
Let The Freak Flag Fly
[Astralwerks]
Rating: 7.4
I really don't know what to make of this album, and I mean it in a good
way. It's like Phish, the Chemical Brothers, Arlo Guthrie and the Olivia
Tremor control got thrown into a blender and served to three different
people. It tasted different to everyone, and while it wasn't entirely
liked by all, it was so different from anything else they heard that
they would never forget it.
That's Tranquility Bass for you. Not quite techno, not quite jam band,
not really folk singers, sort of techno-hippie but not a whole lot like
anything you've heard. It's a bit dense and overreaching, but what do
you expect when the thank you notes give a shout out to "that guy who
sold me that sheet of really good acid"? Overall, I enjoyed the hit and
miss charm of Let the Freak Flag Fly, but I have a feeling that the
next one will be the record where they really hit their stride. In the
meantime, drop one of these on your tongue and chill.
