Cover Art Red Red Meat
There's a Star Above the Manger Tonight
[Sub Pop]
Rating: 6.7

Taking a sharp turn off Melody Lane onto Desconstructive Art Noise Boulevard, There's a Star Above the Manger Tonight is Red Red Meat saying, "This is us being weird now."

Though they've never quite been a "normal" rock band, this is something truly stranger than the stuff you might be used to. The band loses their pop core almost entirely in most songs, veering off into bizarre clanky soundscapes and deadly guitar- wielding massacres.

Manger is clearly a whole piece, though, as opposed to the collection- of- songs method they've demonstrated in the past. Even now, it's hard to tell, but I'm pretty sure I like it.
