Cover Art Lifter Puller
Half Dead and Dynamite
[No Alternative/TRG]
Rating: 8.0

Lifter Puller sounds like Archers of Loaf. A lot like Archers of Loaf. Both bands have strong affinities for skronky guitars, stops n' starts, hollow, throated vocals, and zany lyrics. How zany? Try my personal favorite couplet from the way cool lead off track "To Live and Die on the LBI": "She says she's waiting on the steady type / then she disappears with the eyepatch guy." Occasionally, too zany, like the opening of "Hardware": "Took the hand job at the hardware store / made me feel just like a man." But usually, just zany enough. Not that you'd take these guys as "zany", but I never bought that Girls Against Boys are "sexy," either. Zany, but sharp. Damn sharp. You could cut a brick of cheese with one of their songs. Punchy, like Muhammad Ali before he started shaking like the last leaf on the tree circa November. One of the better releases out of Minneapolis this year.
