Voodoo Glow Skulls
Baile De Los Locos
[Epitaph]
Rating: 8.5
When the Voodoo Glow Skulls grew bored with hardcore punk, they
found salvation in the world of ska. They had seen the ska and it had set
them free. But their punk upbringing is fiercely present. On their second
major label release, Baile de los Locos, the band shows no signs of
developing subtlety, often a symptom of impending death in the punk and
hardcore worlds. Instead, the spit of social criticism flies on "My Soul Is
Sick" and "Freeballin," and the Skulls follow another punk rule: the vocals
are awful.
Most importantly, though, is that throughout Baile de los Locos you
can't tap your toes fast enough to keep up with the... horns? Yes, insane
horns that are like a soundtrack to your amusement park nightmares with all
those scary clowns. Be sure to
listen to catch the unlisted track, a cover of "Feliz Navidad" that is a
blueprint for ska-core and should begin and end your next Christmas party.
