Thank God It's Friday
[Casablanca/Mercury]
Rating: 8.7

You may remember that a couple of years ago, there was a mild resurgence in the popularity of disco music that was quickly replaced by a resurgence in popularity of the much cooler 70's drug scene. As you know, it always takes major corporations a while to catch on to what's hip (case in point, major labels are just now releasing their first compilations of space age lounge music). Mysteriously, after it's way the hell over with, Mercury reissues the classic soundtrack to the definitive disco film, Thank God It's Friday.

The music was clearly the star of the film (of course, with competition from Debra Winger, Donna Summer and Jeff Goldblum, a cameo from my thumb could steal the show), and the album made disco history by producing such hits as Donna Summer's "Last Dance," the Commodore's "Too Hot Ta Trot" and Love and Kisses' title theme. This is an impressive collection of classic disco.

Until now, Thank God It's Friday has only been available in a single-disc version with some of the original tracks taken out due to limited digital storage. The new two-disc version is completely remastered (and it sounds awesome) and there's even a 15-minute long bonus track of Donna Summer's "Je T'aime (Moi Non Plus)."
