The End of Violence
[Outpost]
Rating: 8.3
The complete opposite of this film's musical score (which was penned and
performed by guitarist Ry Cooder), this selection of songs from the film is all over
the map. Luckily, it's got more energy and taste than your typical
movie soundtrack.
Beginning with one of its most powerful tracks, Cooder's
instrumental "Define Violence," the disc moves quickly through
a series of emotional insanity that eithers heightens your
awareness like some ecstasy-inducing hallucinogen or kicks
you when you're down like a nasty ex-girlfriend.
Highlights include DJ Shadow's astounding- as- usual "Untitled Heavy Beat (Part 1 & 2),"
the bossanova genius of Tom Waits' "Little Drop of Poison," the downhome Athens pairing of
Vic Chesnutt and Michael Stipe on the acoustic "Injured Bird" and Roy
Orbison's terrific "You May Feel Me Crying."
This is one of those rare soundtrack albums you might actually
want in your collection. I'd recommend scooping up your
"Singles," "Natural Born Killers" and "The Crow" soundtracks,
taking them down to the record store and exchanging them for
one that actually deserves your attention.
