Boogie Nights #2
[Capitol]
Rating: 7.7
Okay, I better go ahead and state right off the bat that I was prejudiced
towards this record from the moment I pulled it out of my bulging Pitchfork
grab bag of CDs. When I flipped it over to see what was on the album, my eyes
lit up. There it was-- track number eight. Rick Springfield. "Jessie's Girl."
Now, there are some other excellent songs on here. "You Sexy Thing" seems
fits a lot better as porn background music than as stripping music for
them pasty steel workers in Sheffield, England. Three Dog Night's "Mama
Told Me Not to Come" is also included. When I used to hear this song as
a kid, I never really understood what they were saying during the chorus,
but once I realized the phrase was "not to come," I understood its place
on this collection. The Ohio Players' "I Want To Be Free" also comes slamming
through. Just doesn't have the same appeal without the Players' trademark
album cover art, though.
Paul Thomas Anderson's first volume of songs from his glorified porn
documentary "Boogie Nights" was really good, but adding "Jessie's Girl" to
this second disc really sends it over the top. I mean, whose life hasn't
been touched by Rick Springfield's pop confection about love and wanting?
My pal Windsor jumps about like a crack-addicted kangaroo every time
she hears the intro. ("Jesse is a friend...") So raw are her emotions
from repeated listening. I can even remember when I wanted to be Jessie's
girl, but that's a story that belongs on a totally different soundtrack,
if you know what I'm sayin'.
Boogie Nights #2, while not as worthwhile as the original soundtrack
album, is still quite the funky, disco-godfather deluxe, jam-packed, c'est
chic album. Check it out. And may I suggest track eight?
