Dick Hyman
Moog:
The Electric Eclectics of...
[Varese Saraband]
Rating: 9.0
I first found this album in a used record store about a year ago and
wrote about it in Pitchfork. Luckily for everyone, it's just
been reissued -- and with bonus tracks!
This is the quintessential moog record. It's the perfect place for
someone who says, "What's a moog?" to start. The disc includes
the album's original liner notes which explain in great detail exactly
what a moog keyboard is and how it works. It also gives you some insight
into just what the hell old Dick Hyman was thinking when he recorded
each song.
Hyman, originally famous for his whistling ability (believe it or not),
wrote and recorded all of these songs (save for the bonus cuts which
are covers of James Brown's "Give it Up or Turn it Loose" and
Booker T. & The MGs' "Time is Tight") and they're all incredible. With all
the new bands that are incorporating the ancient analog synth, you'd
think it was the most mundane piece of equipment one could own. You'd
be wrong, and Dick proves it.
Moog is the ultimate space-pop record. I've never heard the
moog played with such style and precision. And hey, it's one of those
rare, old records that was goofy enough for Beck to sample from for his
1996 classic, Odelay.
If you've been looking for a record that encapsulates the weird, space
infatuation of 1969 and shows off the remarkable capabilities of the wacky
synth, The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman is clearly the choice.
