The Herbaliser
Wall Crawling Giant Insect Breaks
[Ninja Tune]
Rating: 5.9
Coldcut have had quite an influence on electronic music, and especially
on the roster of artists on their Ninja Tune label. You can hear a little
bit of Coldcut in every Ninja's music, from DJ Vadim and Amon Tobin to
Chocolate Weasel and... well, the Herbaliser.
Their 1997 release, Blow Your Headphones rocked the world with
bulletproof basslines and perverse grooves, and they're currently in
the studio working on a follow-up. In the meantime, we've got this five-
track wonder, Wall Crawling Giant Insect Breaks.
The title track from Insect Breaks has 'Coldcut- inflenced'
written all over it. The band uses the same cut-n-paste strategy
that made Coldcut's "More Beats and Pieces" such a goddamn smash;
they lay down a heavy- assed beat (albeit one that's shockingly
similar to the one used by Luke Vibert on his tune "Slipped Disc")
and sprinkle it with samples from old hip-hop documentaries and
public service announcements. It works, but not without seeming
a bit unimaginative.
Insect Breaks also includes live cuts of both Blow Your
Headphones' "Ginger Jumps The Fence" and a new track, "40
Winks," as well as an instrumental version of the title cut and
"Bonus Beats" from that number. Sure there are better things
you can buy with $7. But can you dance to them?
