Juliana Hatfield
Please Do Not Disturb
[Bar/None]
Rating: 8.8
Since her first solo record, Hey Babe was released early
this decade, Hatfield has been established as one of the leaders of the
female rock movement. Hatfield
has been doing her Lilith-est not to get lumped into the Phair/Amos/Harvey
group that was supposed to come along and be everything Gloria Steinem had
promised. But recently, Hatfield's more or less dropped out of the public eye.
She also dropped off the Atlantic label. Her newest material is featured on the
Bar/None EP Please Do Not Disturb.
This six-song collection spans a variety of styles and topics. "Sellout"
is a "Seether"- esque rocker that delves into artistic purity. Hatfield
switches with ease from that song's wailing guitars to the reflective
"Trying Not to Think About It," where she tries to avoid the cold reality
of a friend dying. "Give Me Some of That" has a pounding, almost hip-hop
feel to the verses, with a singalong chorus that opens up new sonic
avenues for Hatfield.
Please Do Not Disturb was
recorded in Cambridge, MA, which is where Hatfield orignally sprouts from,
and the flavor of Boston's hard rockin' local scene seeps through.
Melodic and still aggressive, Hatfield somehow manages to mix the heavy
and light syrup into a drinkable brew, leaving the listener thirsting for
more.
